Local sweet lovers, especially those with a penchant for Italian desserts, can experience a taste of Arthur Avenue at Teresa’s Bakery & Café located in Eastchester. The authentic Italian bakery is known for its delicious cakes, pastries, cupcakes and cookies, but much of its reputation is based on the delicious cannoli it serves up on a daily basis.
Created lovingly by owner Giulio Darmetta, these tube-shaped shells of creamy ricotta and other delicious ingredients, are legendary with its loyal customer base. Darmetta, who began working in a Bronx bakery at the age of 12, says he has been tweaking his cannoli recipe for years. His wife, Teresa, takes care of the delicious chocolate creations that can be found in the Mill Road café.

Also popular at Teresa’s Bakery is its selection of custom cakes, all made to order for a variety of occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and more, as well as their homemade pies. They include the apple, pumpkin, pecan coconut custard, cherry, banana cream, chocolate peanut butter silk pie, and more. Other Italian dessert specialties like sfogliatelle, tiramisu and cheesecake can also be found at this friendly establishment that provides seating for customers inclined to stop for a cappuccino and dessert.
Teresa’s Bakery & Café, which has a second location on Crosby Avenue in the Bronx, also serves up a variety of hot and cold lunch specials, including Italian wedges and paninis, in addition to homemade meatballs, eggplant parmigiana, as well as a variety of chicken dishes, all made on the premises. A selection of soups is also available daily. They include Italian wedding soup, chicken noodle, split pea with ham, lentil with pasta or no pasta, minestrone and more. Customers may have to wait 20 minutes or more, but Darmetta promises it will be worth it. Darmetta also makes over 40 flavors of Italian ices available for sale in the bakery and also sold to and available at many local pizzerias.
